What is Sports Massage Therapy?
Sports massage takes the ancient principles of massage, practiced throughout the world for centuries and applies them with a greater understanding of how the human body functions. Whilst the title may suggest a focus on working within sport, and it is true to say there is an emphasis on active clients, anyone who is suffering from a condition that limits what they do, will benefit from sports massage.
The Effects of Sports Massage:
- Stretches soft tissue
- Relieves muscle tension
- Improves muscle flexibility
- Reduces muscle spasm
- Improves scar tissue formation
- Reduces swelling
- Relieves pain
Why do injuries happen?
Injuries can happen to anyone during exercise. We can become a bit overzealous at the start of a new venture resulting in doing too much too soon. Alongside this, most of us have some form of postural imbalance. As we become more physically active, these imbalances can surface, resulting, for example, in a further shortening of tight muscles. For some, repetitive training is the cause. Regular changes to training programmes, along with good flexibility can minimise injury here.
A Holistic Approach to Sports Massage Therapy in York
I trained as a sports massage therapist to enable me to treat and rehabilitate both existing & new clients should they sustain an injury from exercise, as well as anyone suffering from a condition that affects what they do in everyday life. I aim to help you continue to be physically active, with a progressive rehabilitation programme to enable you to return to full physical activity.
Sorry, I am no longer providing sports massage therapy. If you have a recurring sports injury, check out my Lifestyle Coaching page.
