New Years Resolutions!
- Do you make them?
- Do you achieve them?
- Have you given up already?
Many of us start the New Year with a list of – stop smoking, lose weight, eat better, get fitter, make more time for me, spend more time with the kids/husband/wife/friends, sort the house out, sort the garden out, be better organised for my holidays, take that course I’ve been meaning to, look for that new job that will give me better work life balance. Usually a list of things we want to achieve. We then set off with gusto for the first 3 or 4 weeks and life seems great! Then, something happens and the old life seems to take over, stress happens, your juggling too much, you just want to collapse, eat, smoke, drink and unwind…….and before you know it, you’re back on the old path again.
Does this sound familiar? Then I’d recommend you try Goal Mapping instead!
Over the next few weeks, I’m going to give you some hints and tips and references to help you start to map your goals, your dreams and your aspirations. This way, your annual New Year Resolutions, will fit with your bigger dreams. They will fit with the life you have mapped out for yourself, the life you believe you can have ….. in fact, you will already be able to feel it, see it, touch it, and smell it. So that every time you make a decision, your subconscious mind, will help you make the right one, to move you towards your goals.
Make no mistake however, setting goals is not easy. If it was, we’d all do well. I have tried to set myself goals for many years, and rarely succeeded very well. Within our working lives, my husband and I have both been exposed to goal setting numerous times, and to be honest, have struggled to put it into real practice, have thought it very much a paper exercise, and therefore have not experienced it as an route to achievement. Recently however, all that has changed. We have opened up our minds to wider possibilities, changed the way we think, and started to believe that we can influence the way we lead our life and what we can achieve.
How have we done this?
Tip 1 – Change the way you think.
The most successful people in the world believe they can achieve anything. Our thoughts are a very powerful force. If we believe something bad will happen, or we can’t do something, then that is what will happen. If we believe something positive will happen, then something positive will happen. Thinking is not enough, we need to believe it.
There is a wealth of information out there that can help you begin the journey to thinking differently. Until you are comfortable with thinking and believing in a positive way, personal goal setting will always feel a bit like a superficial paper exercise. We need to unlock the creative mind, allow ourselves to dream a little.
Tip 2 – Learn and grow by listening to CD version of books.
Listening to books is a great way to download the information in a time saving way: especially if you are not a fan of reading! Or if you believe you currently don’t have the time - Just try one, listen whilst you’re ironing, cleaning, walking to work, in your lunch break, or on the train……and I guarantee you will find the time! Many of you will drive a lot with your job. What about using this time to learn and grow, as a change to listening to music?
Here are a few of books I’d recommend to start:
- ‘The Secret’ by Rhona Byrne
- Goal Mapping by Brian Mayne
- How to get what you really want by Deepak Chopra and Wayne. W. Dyer
They are all available to buy on CD. Good sources for buying these books include:

Knowledge is King
Remember to KEEP AN OPEN MIND. These books are designed to help you change the way that you think!
Next time, we’ll look at ‘our purpose’. What legacy do we wish to leave? In order to set goals, we need to have a bigger picture or how we wish our lives to map out.
LOVE your dream!
